What is DSL - information

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is the technology that brings high-speed bandwidth access to homes and businesses. DSL is high-speed digital lines for ultra-fast Internet access over ordinary copper telephone lines. You need to be within 18,000 ft. of the telephone company central office (CO) to qualify for DSL access. DSL achieves greater download speeds by taking advantage of unused frequencies on existing phone lines. With a DSL line information is transmitted to your computer as digital data and this allows the telephone company to use much wider bandwidth than ordinary telephone line transmission.
DSL enables access to corporate networks for telecommuters, as well as exciting new interactive multimedia applications such as multiplayer gaming, video on demand and ecommerce. It's fast, it's always on and it's cost effective. Imagine, you never have to dial in again and you'll never get bumped from the Internet.
DSL is a private dedicated connection from the end-user to the network. There is no complex configuration or per usage fees as with ISDN lines and DSL is not a shared network service like cable modems, which means higher security for critical data.
