>>> back to the Internet Index What is Spam and what can I do about it? Spam is a computer slang term for e-mail which is unsolicited, unwanted or irritating, often sent to a large number of people at once; i.e. junk e-mail. Just about anyone who has an email address has run across this, if you haven't consider yourself very lucky! The root of this problem is that spamming is not illegal, until there is a change in that situation spam will continue to flourish. This inevitably leads to the following questions: why do I get so much and what can I do about it? It used to be that one would get onto commercial bulk emailing lists because you had supplied your address in a form, survey, questionnaire, etc. This is still the case but in recent years spammers have become much more aggressive in their tactics for obtaining email addresses. All kinds of methods are used to harvest addresses from wherever possible, and there is not a lot that individuals can do to stop this. Here are some basic practises that will minimize your exposure to spam: Never supply your personal or business email address to anyone who does not need it. Get a free web-based email address and give that out if you ever need to supply an email address for something, that account will collect spam but you won't care because you aren't using it for anything important. Never click on the unsubscribe links that are provided in most spam messages. And: use spam blocker! |
